Job Overview
We are seeking a seasoned and detail-oriented Chief Estimator to join our team in Pittsburgh, PA. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with general contracting and a proven track record of leading successful estimating operations. This individual will play a pivotal role in shaping our preconstruction efforts by managing the estimating department, developing competitive bids, and fostering strong client relationships.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating Leadership:
- Oversee and manage the estimating department, ensuring accurate and competitive bids for commercial, industrial, and institutional construction projects.
- Develop and implement estimating strategies, policies, and procedures to drive efficiency and accuracy.
- Lead and mentor a team of estimators, providing guidance and fostering professional growth.
Bid Development:
- Analyze project plans, specifications, and scope documents to prepare detailed cost estimates.
- Identify and solicit proposals from qualified subcontractors and suppliers.
- Ensure all bids are comprehensive, competitive, and aligned with company goals.
- Prepare detailed takeoffs and cost breakdowns for materials, labor, equipment, and subcontracted work.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with project managers, clients, architects, and engineers to clarify project requirements and ensure alignment.
- Represent the company in pre-bid meetings, client presentations, and negotiations.
- Maintain strong relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, and other stakeholders to ensure reliable pricing and partnerships.
Market Knowledge and Analysis:
- Monitor industry trends, material costs, and labor rates to maintain accurate cost databases.
- Evaluate historical data and project performance to improve future estimates and project outcomes.
- Provide insights on market conditions and risks that could impact project costs and timelines.
Reporting and Documentation:
- Develop and present comprehensive bid packages and executive summaries to leadership.
- Maintain meticulous records of estimates, bids, and project documentation for future reference.
- Continuously refine estimating tools, software, and processes to improve efficiency and accuracy.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
- 10+ years of experience in estimating within the general contracting industry.
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in estimating software such as Sage Estimating, PlanSwift, Procore, or equivalent platforms.
- Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, codes, and best practices.
- Exceptional analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving abilities.
Leadership Skills:
- Demonstrated ability to lead and develop high-performing teams.
- Strong communication and negotiation skills with the ability to foster collaboration among diverse stakeholders.
Certifications:
- Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) designation is a plus.
- OSHA certification or equivalent safety training preferred.
Other Requirements:
- Knowledge of the Pittsburgh construction market, including local subcontractor and supplier networks.
- Ability to travel locally for site visits and pre-bid meetings as required.
